Steps to Buying a Used Car
Purchasing a used car can be an exciting, yet nerve racking, time. The searching process is more time consuming and involved then if you were to buy a new car because there are additional risks from the used condition.
To help walk you through the process of purchasing a used car, I have outlined the most important steps below.
Step 1: Determine your budget. Whether you are trading in or selling an existing car or you are purchasing a used car as your first automobile, you will need to figure out how much you can afford. Considerations should include how you plan on paying for the car- cash, financing from the bank, or financing from the dealer. If you choose to finance, you will need to determine how much money you can put down and how much you can afford for a monthly payment.
Step 2: Decide what type of car you wish to purchase, keeping within your budget. Try to narrow it down to between 3 and 5 options. Websites like Auto Trader and Kelly Blue Book will help give a general idea on prices.
Step 3: Research the cars that you have narrowed down to in order to determine their safety record, performance, reliability, and popularity. These will all play a part in how easy or difficult it is to find that specific model used car. For instance, if the type of car is very popular, there is most likely fewer to choose from and the price will be higher.
Step 4: Begin the search for available cars. This can be done online, in newspapers, at dealerships, or through personal contacts. Do not go for the first car you find. Select at least 3 to compare.
Step 5: Test drive the cars. During the test drives you should be paying attention to any rattles or squeaks like engine noise, how it feels and fits you, the visibility that you have, the roominess or space provided, suspension or how the car drives. For instance, the automotive control cables could be loose causing the suspension to be shaky or unaligned.
Step 6: Compare the cars that you have tested. Consider the way they drive and their value, a result of the price compared to the condition, mileage, used car certification, and warranty.
Step 7: Once you find the one you want, negotiate the price. Start with something low but in the ballpark of the asking price. Do not accept any offers that you are uncomfortable with.
Step 8: Close the deal by signing the papers, contacting your car insurance to notify them of the purchase, and driving off with the tags and inspection complete.
